Beethoven in association with baroque "ritual music"? If one listens to three peculiarly archaic pieces, his Aequale, which he composed for friends' funeral ceremonies, the question is immediately put into perspective: Beethoven's short pieces sound so austere and retrospective that they fit effortlessly into the program, which spans the spectrum from Schütz to Johann Sebastian Bach and Anton Brucker. Festive and solemn ceremonies are at the heart of all the works, all of which are rooted in their own world and yet touch on the universally human. It is about moods between light and shadow, heaven and earth, and, last but not least, about the hope for life after death.
