Folk Music of the Mediterranean – from Spain to the Balkans – and Early Music Sounds

Friday, 07.10.2016, 20:00 Uhr | Gera, Salvatorkirsche

1 | Opening Concert: Mediterraneo

Fado, Fandango, Canzone, Tarantella … With this program, these adventurous musicians who have settled in Paris and won multiple Echo-Prizes search for clues seeking connections between baroque music and characteristic musical styles from countries bordering on the Mediterranean. Christina Pluhar and her highly virtuostic ensemble unite musical traditions from Portugal, Catalonia, Spain, Italy, and Greece, with an exuberant joy in music-making, creating a “sound of Europe”. A trip along the Mediterranean coast, full of sunshine and poetry.

“In the 17th century, there was significant mixing of folk music with concert music. Take for example the way of composing over an ostinato bass: at the time that was really a fad that arose out of folk music. Well-known musical forms such as folia, ciaccona, passacaglia, tarantella – they all originate from traditional songs and dances that composers began to collect and use at the beginning of the 17th century.”
